7 Things You Didn't Expect When Buying a Property in Haliburton County
1. It’s not Muskoka. And it never will be.
Some people call Haliburton Highlands the best kept secret of cottage country. It’s quiet here. No one competes with the Joneses, and it is easy to disappear into your own slice of paradise. Haliburton maintains that nice, small town feel where locals smile and things are just … simple.
2. You’re bound to bump into a current or former NHL player here.
Matt Duchene, Cody Hodgson, Ron Stackhouse, Bernie Nicholls, Walt McKecknie, Troy Austen (just kidding – if you saw him play you’d know how funny this joke really is) … these are just a handful of our local hockey talent. There truly is ‘something in the water’.
3. You’ll discover art you didn’t know you love!
From jewellery and garments to pottery, sculptures and glass blowing, everything you can think of is here and even things you’ve never thought of. It’s sprinkled around the county and easily viewable during studio tours or all in one convenient location at our annual ‘Art in the Park’ weekend at the Haliburton Rotary Park. There are also many courses offered at the local college for those looking to build their own art skills.
4. Your kids will love it here.
Unless they’re the type of kids who don’t enjoy swimming, beaches, boating, skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, shopping, eating, relaxing, sightseeing, mountain biking, cliff diving, time with old friends, meeting new friends, golfing or ATV’ing.... In which case there is wi-fi available in most areas of the county now.
5. You swore you’d never try Curling. Guess what..
...you will. It’s not just for retirees (but is a common retirement hobby..) young and old alike flock to this seemingly boring activity that will actually challenge and excite you. Like a giant game of slippery crocanole you will be bewildered by the competitive spirit that comes flooding out of otherwise gentle and calm elderly folk.
6. You will be busier in the Winter than you thought.
Many people come to the Highlands in the ‘off’ season for a variety of reasons. Snowmobiling is a big one, so is skiing. But there are many options you may not have thought of. Ice fishing, skating, snowshoeing, dog sledding, pond hockey, and of course – eating at one of our fantastic restaurants or relaxing at a spa.
7. Health care with very little wait time.
Anyone who’s recently visited a GTA emergency room is probably wondering why this isn’t #1. We have 2 hospitals, one in Minden and one in Haliburton that have 24/7 emergency care. They are used to seeing the ‘small stuff’ also so don’t worry about having all annoying ailments that you don’t want to put off for your family doctor looked after here.
We have a great team of people here to help you find your slice of Haliburton!
